IEI Pakistan's Mentorship based Volunteer Programs aim to support a child's holistic development journey. Volunteers are free to design their own programs in-line with the aim & ongoing themes for these programs.

Please ensure our program is a good fit for you. Carefully read what is expected of you as an IEI Pakistan Volunteer Fellow.
Mentorship Themes for Programs in 2019 target students from Primary to Middle School. Themes are open to collaborative input by Volunteer Fellows. We encourage Project Based Engagement & the use of Mixed Media:

  1. Personality Development
    This theme aims to support holistic development of young individuals by helping them understand the importance of teamwork, perserverance, self-reflection, empathy, tolerance & respectfulness. This theme has everything to do with empowering a students mental & psychological wellbeing. Volunteer Fellows are encouraged to try hands-on approaches for engagement, use your creativity!

  2. Young Entrepreneurs: Entrepreneurial Development at Grassroot Level

    This programme aims to develop Young Entrepreneurs within children, age group 7-18, by providing invaluable insight into business, life & financial literacy skills. While the design for this programme is open for creative contribution by the volunteers, the objective is to use a hands-on approach in the form of creating a micro-enterprise.

  3. Student Integration through Sports
    Sports is a fantastic way for young children to polish their leadership & team skills. It helps a students life both inside and outside the classroom. If you have ideas for sports coaching & integration, this theme is for you!

  4. Our Climate Action
    Project Based Engagement to promote environmental awareness including global challenges today like Global Warming & Climate Change. Get Creative to engage students in a fun learning experience!

  5. Global Citizenship
    We live in a global world, even when we can't see it our lives are deeply interconnected to those in other parts of the world. This theme works to encourage perspectives on what it means to be a Global Citizen in today's world. Topics can range from Food, Cultures, Experiences, Art & Music, our volunteer fellows are encouraged to make the content & delivery exciting & fun.

  • Location: 3100 meters above sea level, highest settlement in the district.
  • Time to Reach Shimshal from Passu: 3hrs
  • Total Area: 3800 square km
  • Households: approx. 240
  • Inhabitants: approx 2000
  • Language: Wakhi
  • Other Languages Spoken: Brushaski, Urdu, English
  • Schools in the Valley: 2 (1 Government School, 1 Private Donor Funded school recently taken up by AKESP)
Mininum Volunteer Duration is 1 week. Maximum Volunteer Duration is 2 weeks .

    For those who wish to apply for more than 2 weeks, please look at our regular volunteer programs For 2019 there are 10 Volunteer Cycles active from March to December. First Volunteer Cycle begins March 5th 2019.

    You can select your month and duration of volunteering within the application.
Our Programs run in remote areas of Gilgit Baltistan, prospective Volunteers should keep the following in mind:

  4. Community Integration Activities
  5. Harsh Weather Conditions

Note: Volunteers travel alone or in group depending on the dates/travel details of a Volunteer Cycle.
The Travel Itinerary is divided into 2 parts:
a. Home Location to Hunza: Volunteers are responsible of arriving in Hunza on their own.
b. Hunza to Shimshal: Local Travel Options are available in Aliabad, Hunza to Shimshal for a few hundred Rupees.

All Volunteers are accommodated at the IEI Residence in the Valley. This is a communal living space with shared rooms & bathrooms (no gender segregation)

All meals are prepared at the IEI Residence. Volunteers are encouraged to participate in meal preparation activities.
Meal Menu Items are dependent on Fresh Produce Availability & Recipe bank of the person cooking.
Chai/Coffee is on the house.
As Non-profit organization Our programs rely on Volunteers to help raise the finances to support their own duration of stay.
Volunteer Fee:

1 Week, 7 Days: 12,000 PKR
2 weeks, 15 Days: 15,000 PKR

For more than two weeks, please apply to the regular volunteer programs.

This contribution goes towards managing your volunteer stay with us by supporting:

  3. Emergency Insurance
  4. 24- Hour Field Support
  5. Print Services
  6. Adventure & Excursions

Art Supplies are provided by IEI Pakistan.
